Our Story

“We are your job.” — Joe & Sue Coulter

A young man standing outdoors in front of a house with clapboard siding, wearing a white shirt, dark pants, and a wide-brimmed hat, with hands on his hips.

Coulter’s Hands Home Care was born from a legacy of faith, compassion, and unwavering support. Our story begins with Joe and Sue Coulter—devoted ministers and beloved grandparents of our founder, Katrina Coffey, RN. Joe and Sue spent their lives traveling the world, laying hands on the hurting and the lost, spreading the word of God, and witnessing miracles. Their hands were instruments of healing and hope—hands that served as the foundation for everything we are today.

Katrina always knew she was called to care for others, but it wasn’t until she stood beside her grandmother’s bed as her personal nurse in her final days, that the calling became crystal clear. That moment was the divine confirmation she didn’t know she was waiting for. As Katrina cared for her Nana in the same spirit of love and service her Nana had shown to many others, she heard the quiet voice of God say, “This, my child is why I chose this path for you……”

Katrina’s Nana had always dreamed of becoming a nurse but was never afforded the opportunity. Instead, she poured her dream into her granddaughter. “Honey,” she often said, “you are living my dream.” With that same dream in their hearts, Nana and Papa became Katrina’s strongest supporters through nursing school. They made it clear: she had one job—to become the nurse they knew she was meant to be.

Just six months before his passing, Joe Coulter told Katrina, “Sweetheart, I’ve done a lot in my life, and I have one more mission on this earth —to get you across that stage; then I’m going home.” They both supported her emotionally, spiritually, and even financially—insisting she not work, because they were her job. Little did Katrina know, they weren’t just getting her through nursing school, they were laying the foundation for Coulter’s Hands Home Care.

Our agency is a personification of that legacy—a continuation of those “Coulter’s Hands.” We offer private pay home care services rooted in compassion, faith, and dignity. Whether providing wound care, trach support, or simply holding a hand in prayer, our mission is to serve families with the same love and dedication that Joe and Sue Coulter poured into Katrina’s life.

At Coulter’s Hands Home Care, we don’t just provide care—we carry forward a legacy.

Trust ~ Dignity ~ Compassion

At Coulter’s Hands We value many different things, but Trust, Dignity, and Compassion are at the top of our priority list. Why?

  • TRUST: Trust is essential in hospice care, as it enables open, honest communication between nurses and families. This trust allows families to share crucial details about the patient, leading to personalized and effective care. It provides emotional reassurance, helping families feel supported during tough times and encouraging adherence to care plans for better symptom management. Trust also ensures families feel confident in decision-making and helps manage emergencies smoothly. It enables nurses to address the patient’s physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs comprehensively, which is vital for compassionate hospice care.

DIGNITY:  Upholding dignity in end-of-life care is crucial as it aligns with ethical principles of integrity, respect, and compassion. It ensures patients are treated as a person with respect and not just as patients, fostering trust and improving their quality of life. By honoring their preferences and privacy, dignity makes their remaining time more meaningful and comfortable. It also supports emotional well-being, reducing feelings of anxiety and depression while providing comfort and solace to families. Ultimately, the way patients are treated in their final days significantly impacts how families remember their loved ones. Ensuring dignity helps create positive, respectful memories, aiding in the families' grieving and healing process

COMPASSION: We believe compassion is at the heart of hospice care, crucial for building meaningful relationships between our nurses and families. It offers essential emotional support during a profoundly challenging time which helps to ease fear and sadness while providing comfort. Genuine compassion builds trust, leading to better communication and personalized care. It fosters a human connection that respects patients' dignity, reduces feelings of isolation, and ensures that both patients and families feel valued. Knowing that the care team is emotionally present can provide significant comfort. This improves patient outcomes and leaves a lasting positive impression on families. It contributes to a sense of peace and closure, knowing that their loved one was treated with kindness and respect during their final days.

Meet the Coffey Family

We moved to Charlotte, NC in the fall of 2016 from Memphis, TN. We were both born and raised in the Memphis area and attended the University of Memphis. We have two children Amelia and Phoenix. As a family, we attend the First Baptist of Indian Trail church, where both of our children also attend school. We enjoy our family time by camping, playing on the beach, backyard movie nights, and Friday night game nights. Game nights can be quite competitive in the Coffey house. Both Amelia and Phoenix enjoy playing soccer and swimming outside of school. Together, the Coffey family have been praying for Coulter’s Hands nurses and nursing assistants as we embark on a journey together to care for our hospice patients and their families.
